What did Donald Trump say about Rob Reiner’s death?
On December 15, President Trump addressed the Reiners’ deaths in a post on Truth Social, calling them “very sad” and suggesting that the Reiners died because they were critical of Trump.
President Trump’s post read: “Suffering and struggling, Rob Reiner, once a highly talented film director and comedy star, has reportedly passed away along with his wife, Michele, from a severe and incurable illness caused by the paralyzing disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome (also known as TDS) and the anger he provoked in others.” “He was known for driving people crazy with his rabid obsession with President Donald J. Trump. His apparent paranoia reached new heights as the Trump administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, ushering in America’s golden age perhaps never before.”
He also wished them peace.
At the time of Trump’s post, officials had not suggested the death was political.
Rob Reiner says Donald Trump is ‘mentally unfit to be president’
Reiner has long been a critic of President Trump and a donor to Democratic candidates. In 2024, he hosted former Vice President Kamala Harris at a fundraiser at his Brentwood home, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a 2017 interview with Variety magazine, Reiner said Trump was “mentally unfit” to be president.
“Donald Trump is the most unqualified person ever to serve as President of the United States.”
Reiner’s criticism continued this season.
“Our democracy is being taken away and we only have about a year left,” he said in an interview with MS NOW in October. “We’re going downhill so fast that we have to find a way to stop it.”
Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Gavin Newsom and others mourn Reiner’s death
Several prominent Democratic Party members posted condolences on social media over Reiner’s death.
Former President Barack Obama said he and former First Lady Michelle Obama were “heartbroken” after hearing the news.
“At the root of every story he created was a deep belief in human goodness and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived their lives with purpose,” the post reads. “They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired.”
Other California Democrats posted similarly, praising his political work.
“Rob and his wife Michelle loved each other very much. They were close friends. Doug and I are shocked to learn of their passing,” Harris wrote. “Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this tragic time.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom called Reiner a “genius with a big heart.”
Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi, whose husband was attacked in their home in 2022, called the news “shocking.”
“It’s hard to think of someone more remarkable and outstanding in every field and endeavor they pursued,” she said in an article for X magazine. “Rob was creative, funny, and loved, and in all of their endeavors, Michelle was an essential partner, intellectual resource, and beloved wife.”
