Former President Joe Biden issued his first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples Day 2021 on the same day as Columbus Day. Although it is not recognized as a federal holiday, it is recognized as a holiday in some cities and states. This declaration followed long-standing criticism of Christopher Columbus’ treatment of Native Americans.

Are banks, post offices, and delivery services open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

According to the U.S. Postal Service website, all post offices will be closed to retail transactions and there will be no regular residential or business mail delivery on Monday, October 13th. Priority Mail Express is available 365 days a year, including federal holidays.

Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Trust, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase branches will close on Oct. 13, the companies told USA TODAY. Capital One Cafe will remain open.

As for delivery services, UPS pickup and delivery services will be available starting October 13, and UPS Store locations will remain open, according to the company’s website. FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available starting Oct. 13, and FedEx offices will be open on the same day, according to the company’s website.

Is the stock market open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

Monday, October 13th will be a regular business day for the U.S. stock market, as markets will not be closed for Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day. Meanwhile, the U.S. bond market will be closed, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

After closing for Labor Day on September 1st, the next scheduled stock market closure is Thursday, November 27th for Thanksgiving, meaning Wall Street will be open for business as usual until late November.

Are government buildings and courthouses closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

Because Columbus Day is a federal holiday, most federal and state government offices, including courthouses, will be closed on October 13th.

Depending on where you live, trash collection and other public services may also be affected.
