According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday celebrates “the social and economic achievements of American workers,” and is rooted in the second half of the 19th century when labor activists recognised a federal holiday as a “recognizing America’s strength, prosperity and happiness.”
The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, and by 1894 23 states had adopted leave. President Glover Cleveland signed the law on June 28, 1894, which marks the first Monday of September each year as a national holiday.
