  • Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz has signed an executive order to protect state access to vaccines.
  • The order follows new federal guidelines that restrict access to the latest COVID-19 shots.
  • Walz’s order allows Minnesota healthcare providers to use medical judgment to administer the vaccine.

Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz has signed the September 8 executive order, nearly two weeks after the Food and Drug Administration approved the latest Covid-19 vaccine, protecting vaccine accessibility.

On September 27, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a more strict limit on who has access to the new shot.

“The emergency use permit for the Covid vaccine, once used to justify a wide range of orders by the public during the Biden administration, has now been revoked,” Kennedy wrote on August 27th on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the new FDA guidelines, patients over the age of 65 with existing health problems and those with existing health problems will be recommended for the Covid-19 vaccine under the new guidelines.

Walz’s new executive order will provide healthcare providers with the ability to “use medical judgment” to recommend and manage vaccines.

“Vaccinations are one of the biggest public health outcomes in modern medicine,” Walz wrote in a statement. “The Trump administration is trying to restrict access to preventive care for Americans, but Minnesota is led by science and medical expertise, prioritizing the health and safety of our people.”

The Minnesota Department of Health reviews Covid-19 vaccine vaccination recommendations and will issue protocols by September 24th.

MDH and the Minnesota Department of Commerce will meet with health professionals and industry stakeholders to identify barriers to vaccine access and provide WALZ recommendations for potential solutions by October 6th.

Kennedy did not provide a reason for the change in recommendations. However, the recommendations do not mean that the vaccine is not available to those who want it.

“These vaccines are available to all patients selected after consulting with a doctor,” Kennedy wrote in the post.

According to USA Today, insurance companies typically adhere to federal recommendations, and those who don’t meet federal recommendations may cost around $200.
