According to defense officials, the B-2 stealth bomber has carried out a series of strikes on Iranian targets. There were no US casualties in the attack.
The US will move B-2 bombers to Guam amidst the tensions in the Middle East, officials say
The US is moving B-2 bombers to Guam, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Saturday. President Donald Trump has considered whether the United States should take part in Israel’s strike against Iran.
WASHINGTON – The US has attacked Iran and attacked bombing sites related to the country’s nuclear facilities, President Donald Trump announced in a social media post on Saturday night.
The B-2 stealth bomber has carried out a series of strikes over Iranian targets, according to senior officials. There were no US casualties.
Measures to protect nearly 40,000 U.S. troops in the area have gradually increased over the past two weeks, officials not allowed to speak publicly said. The Army was third of four levels of warnings in most parts of the area, officials said.
Iran is expected to retaliate in some way, officials said. However, Iran’s ability to counterattack has been degraded by Israeli airstrikes. Iran is still considered to have offensive capabilities, including drones that could target bases in the region, officials said.
The B-2 stealth bomber is based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. They are the only aircraft that can deliver the GBU-57, the Bunker-destroying GBU-57, the largest traditional bomb of the Pentagon. The bomb can penetrate deep into the ground, even through concrete, before supplying devastating explosives.
Iran’s deep buried nuclear sites would have needed multiple strikes to damage or destroy the equipment they possess.
“A full payload of the bomb has been dropped on major sites, Fordor,” Trump said in The Truth Society. “All planes are safe on the way home.” The site is located under the mountains.
The Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks unlocked within Iran have compromised what was considered robust air defense, officials said.
It is unclear whether other US fighters took part in the attack. However, the Pentagon may have taken steps to allow the pilot to be able to save him if the pilot was being fired down or if a mechanical failure causes the pilot to eject from the fighter.
Now the Pentagon braces to fight back. In 2020, after the Pentagon killed Iranian General Kasem Soleimani, Iran responded by launching 13 ballistic missiles at an air base in Iraq. The attack wounded more than 100 US troops.
