The UK will step up its legal immigration requirements and extend its waiting list for newcomers to assert citizenship, Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said Monday that it announced numerous policy changes to resist the political barrage from the country’s brave populist rights.
Immigrants must wait up to 10 years before attempting to become British citizens, sourced from five years. He said the requirements surrounding English skill level and proficiency will be raised to ultimately reverse the long-standing increase in legal migration to the UK.
“The plan means migration will fall, and that’s a promise,” Starge said. He denounced the previous conservative government for its immigration records, saying, “The damages we have inflicted on our country are immeasurable.”
His intervention was accompanied by a much-anticipated white paper on migration, but the timing was no coincidence. Less than two weeks after the round of local elections crucially won by the populist British party in Nigel Farage, anti-immigrants are reflected, reflecting the sustained increase in support for the party in the vote.
Starmer adopted a tone related to Farage, in a Monday morning press conference on Downing Street, saying the UK risks becoming a “stranger island” without harsh reforms.
Government figures for the year ending June 2024 show that the figures significantly higher than the dominant political parties in British politics left it last year than more than 700,000 people have competed in the UK. This increase adds to the already high demand for housing and UK public services, but it also created a way for foreign workers to staff the country’s chronically unmanned health system.
Under the new plan, Priority sought to strengthen the rules without blocking these pipelines. The years before immigrants applied for citizenship have doubled to 10, but people who contribute significantly to society, such as doctors, nurses, and engineers, could be quickly tracked through the process.
All immigrants will need a higher level of English skills, and graduates will be allowed to remain in the UK two years later for 18 months after their degree is completed.
Overseas recruitment of social care workers will also be discontinued. This is a move that poses a threat of chaos to sectors that have failed to modernize successive governments.
Farage criticized the announcement Monday, calling it a “hypocrite who believes in open borders.”
But the government hopes the proposal will stick out from the surge in support for the right-wing party, which has been robbing votes from both Labour and Conservatives with a sharp immigration message.
Although priorities have sought to strengthen the party’s rhetoric on illegal migration, the number of people crossing the English Channel on small boats has so far been higher than this year in 2024, a political gift to Farage’s Party.
