President Donald Trump talks about the possibility of deporting Elon Musk
Donald Trump spoke about whether he deported Elon Musk as the former Doge head continues to criticize the president’s sweeping spending bill.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent criticized Elon Musk’s new political party, saying that the world’s wealthiest man is not a common part of the Trump administration.
Asked about Musk’s move, Bessent told CNN’s Dana Bash that the idea behind the government’s Ministry of Government Efficiency efforts (also known as Doge) is “very popular.”
But “If you look at the vote, I think Elon wasn’t,” Bescent said of the former adviser to the president who led the White House efforts to cut down on the size of the federal government.
On July 5, Musk announced that he would form a new political party amid a grievance over President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax policy bill.
“I believe the boards of his various companies wanted him to come back and run a company that is better than anyone else,” Bescent said of Musk’s departure from the federal government.
“So we imagine these boards didn’t like this announcement yesterday and would encourage him to focus on his business activities rather than his political activities,” he added.
A Quinnipiac University poll released last month found that 30% of American voters said they had a positive opinion of Musk. 62% of Republicans supported billionaires, down from 78% in the university’s March survey.
Bescent and Musk clashed repeatedly during the billionaire administration, calling Musk a “scam” in Bescent, throwing masks into Bescent’s rib cage in the White House, causing a “scrum” between them, according to multiple reports.
Musk and Trump have also rebutted in recent weeks. Musk is critical of Trump and Congress’ Republicans’ efforts to pass tax bills that wipe out, and argues that addle to addle the country with so many debts is reckless. GOP leaders argue that the bill will drive economic growth.
Trump signed the bill into law on July 4th. Tesla and SpaceX CEOs shared with X the following day that he was starting the “American Party,” but the broader convictions of the party were not immediately clear.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and grafts, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk said on X on July 5th.
