WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump told reporters that “a lot” of federal workers may be fired for the looming federal shutdown.

The White House Office of Management and Budget had asked agents to plan to fire workers rather than simply attack them, like in past closures. Trump denounced Democrats in the layoffs approaching midnight on September 30th.

“Well, we might do a lot, that’s just for Democrats,” Trump said.

Trump met with Congressional leaders on September 29th, but remained stuck. Trump has denounced the Democrats’ closure of health care for undocumented immigrants.

“They want to look after people who come illegally to our country, and there’s no system to handle that,” Trump said. “We’re totally against that.”

Republican leaders said the aim is to prevent undocumented immigrants from receiving federal health benefits and require 80 hours of work or volunteer services a month to receive benefits.

But Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, focused on expanding federal grants under Obamacare, which Republicans have long been trying to repeal.

“We see people not being able to get the health care they need, and Americans are screaming for some help,” Schumer said. “It’s our job as legislative leaders to try to solve this problem, or at least solve it.”
