WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has announced that he will hold next year’s G-20 Summit at a golf resort in Doral, Florida. He attempted to convene world leaders during his first term at the same facility near Miami.
After discussing the summit in his September 5th statement in the Oval Office, Trump pushed back a proposal that could personally benefit from the event. “Everyone wants that,” he said.
“The place is the best and we don’t make any money on it,” Trump said. “We’re doing a deal that doesn’t make money. There’s no money. I just want to do it well. Each country has its own buildings. I think it’s going to be really beautiful.”
The president was joined by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and two top economic staff, heading G-20 preparation and programming, director of the National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett and Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent.
“President Trump’s “America’s first” initiative doesn’t mean America alone. That means America is taking the lead,” Bescent said. “The United States is returning to the international stage as a leader.”
In 2019, during his first term, Trump announced plans to hold the 2020 G-7 Summit at Doral Resort, but later repealed the proposal amid ethical concerns from both Democrats and Republican lawmakers.
The G-20 consists of 19 countries and two regions of two countries: the European Union and the African Union. This accounts for 85% of the world’s gross domestic product and 75% of international trade.
Trump told reporters that he would skip this year’s G-20 summit in South Africa, set it in November and send Vice President JD Vance instead. “I’m not going. JD will be going,” Trump said. “He looks forward to it.
Suarez touted the economic impact of the summit and thanked Trump “believe in Miami.”
“This decision is not only important in general to cities, but it also maps them as one of the truly great global cities,” Suarez said.
