Newsom criticizes the Trump administration
California’s government’s Gavin Newsom encouraged activists to draw inspiration from the actions of historic social leaders.
The Trump administration is pulling half of the California State Guard members he deployed in a major rollback of his militarized response to protests against statewide immigrant arrests and attacks.
“Our military forces stepped up to answer calls have calmed the lawlessness in Los Angeles,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a July 15 statement. “As such, the Secretary ordered the release of 2,000 California National Guard (79th IBCT) from the federal protection mission.”
Trump deployed 4,000 California National Security Guards on June 7, stepping up immigrant raids and arrests, responding to protests that won the southern part of the state after targeting farms, restaurants and hardware stores in the Los Angeles area. He also ordered 700 Marines to cities tasked with protecting federal property.
The development was accused by state Democrats who called the president’s over-authority and accused Trump of inciting violence. Trump claims that “Los Angeles is on fire right now” unless it’s a military presence.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration, but the appeals court ruled that Trump could continue to control the National Guard forces in mid-June.
