Who is in Medicaid? Popular programs may be in the chopping block
72 million people in the United States are enrolled in Medicaid, a federal and state health insurance program for people with disabilities or low incomes.
The Trump administration cancelled the USDA’s annual food insecurity survey and ended decades of efforts to track the number of Americans struggling to access enough food, the Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.
The USDA said household food security reports have become “overly politicized” and are no longer needed, but the 2024 edition will still be released in October. The 2025 investigation will not be conducted, the USDA said in a statement.
The cancellation of the report, which has been in place for 30 years, comes amid rising food insecurity and recent cuts in federal food assistance programs, including more stringent work requirements for recipients of the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program.
The USDA said it would continue to have access to more “timely and accurate data,” claiming its annual report “is inaccuracy, incorrect indicators, zero accountability, and a massive willingness for larger, larger government programs.”
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the cancellation of the investigation.
The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
