Toyota bZ Woodland SUV targets 375 horsepower EV rival

  • Toyota’s compact electric SUV has a range of up to 401 miles.
  • The bZ Woodland comes with standard AWD and 375 horsepower.

Toyota’s U.S. EV lineup will triple this spring as some automakers scale back investment and production in electric vehicles.

Toyota, the world’s largest carmaker, has been heavily criticized for being slow to adopt EV technology, but the Japanese giant appears to be holding its ground as smaller companies retreat.

Perhaps the best-selling of the two currently arriving at dealerships, the 2026 bZ Woodland compact SUV adds space, power, and performance to the compact bZ, which until now was Toyota’s only EV.

Toyota and Subaru are collaborating on some vehicles, including EVs. Subaru plans to sell a nearly identical vehicle called the Trailseeker.

Subaru manufactures the bZ Woodland and Trail Seeker in Yajima, Japan.

2026 Toyota bZ Woodland trim levels and prices

  • bZ Woodland: $45,300
  • bZ Woodland Premium: $47,400

How big is it? How powerful is it? how much?

The bZ Woodland is an expanded and more capable version of Toyota’s compact EV, the bZ EV. This increases overall length by 5.6 inches and splits rear legroom and cargo space almost evenly. Ground clearance increases by 0.2 inches.

The two electric motors deliver a total of 375 horsepower.

The bZ has a standard NACS charging port that is compatible with Tesla fast chargers. All bZ Woodlands come with an adapter for CCS chargers.

According to EOPA estimates, the bZ’s 74.7kWh battery provides up to 401 miles of range. DC fast charging charges the battery from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes under ideal conditions. The maximum speed for DC charging is 150kW.

The 240v Level 2 charger that most EV owners use at home or work should charge the battery to 100% overnight.

The bZ Woodland competes with combustion engine models such as the Equinox and Nissan Rogue, hybrid versions of the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan, as well as EVs such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Hyundai Kona EV, Volkswagen ID and Volvo EX30.

Prices start at $45,300. All prices exclude $1,450 destination charge.

Driving impression

All-terrain tires (a no-cost option) allow the bZ Woodland to intelligently navigate rutted dirt trails from the coast to the beautiful ocean views several miles inland.

Woodland’s two electric motors deliver a total of 375 horsepower. Each delivers 198 pound-feet of torque.

Although the Woodland doesn’t have skid plates or other off-road gear, the precise control of the motor’s generous torque output provided excellent traction over the steep trails and potholes and humps Toyota created to demonstrate the SUV’s capabilities.

On the road, the bZ is quiet and comfortable, with responsive steering and plenty of power for overtaking.

The front seats are comfortable. There is also plenty of storage in the center console.

The 14-inch touch screen is crisp and responsive. In my preferred driving position, the steering wheel obstructed visibility of the bottom of the small – 7-inch – gauge cluster, a disappointing design.

2026 Toyota bZ Woodland main features

  • Cruising range 281 miles
  • standard all wheel drive
  • Built-in NACS Tesla style charging port.
  • More passenger and cargo space than Toyota bZ
  • All-terrain tires available
  • Ground clearance 8.4 inches
  • 14 inch touch screen
  • 18 inch wheels
  • Standard heated front and rear outboard seats
  • heated steering wheel
  • 4 USB-C ports

Why buy a 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland?

The 2026 bZ Woodland brings Toyota’s strong reputation for quality and reliability to one of the most popular vehicle classes: EVs. It has plenty of power and some off-road capability.

A built-in NACS charging port provides access to Tesla’s lauded DC charging network for long-distance drives. Toyota’s inclusion of an adapter-free product for CCS DC chargers allows you to take advantage of both fast charging networks at savings of up to $250 over what other automakers charge for approved adapters.
