Tony Dokoupil is the new anchor of CBS Evening News
According to the network, Dokoupil, who has co-hosted CBS Morning with Gayle King and Nate Burleson since 2019, will move to the Evening News on January 5, 2026.
At his new job, Tony Dokoupil may be able to snooze through an early alarm clock.
The Emmy Award-winning television journalist and CBS News staple has been named anchor of “CBS Evening News,” CBS announced in a statement Wednesday, Dec. 10. Dokoupil’s appointment follows the retirement of anchor Norah O’Donnell, who held the position from 2019 in 2024.
Dokoupil, who has co-hosted CBS Morning with Gayle King and Nate Burleson since 2019, will move to the Evening News on January 5, 2026, the network said.
CBS announced that Dokoupil, 44, will “come out from behind the anchor desk and meet with viewers in cities and towns across America” in his new role.
“We live in a time when many people have lost trust in the media, and Tony Dokoupil is the person who will restore that trust,” CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss said in a statement.
“He believes in the values of old-fashioned journalism: asking the hard questions, following the facts wherever they lead, and holding ourselves accountable,” Weiss continued. “Americans hungry for equity will see it on display night after night.”
Dokoupil, who joined CBS News in 2016, has anchored several major news events during his nearly 10-year tenure, including the Oct. 7 terrorist attack in Israel, the papal conference in Rome and the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington, D.C., as well as interviewing A-list stars such as Dolly Parton, Harry Styles, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Stiller.
“After 20 years in journalism, traveling to all 50 states and speaking to people in hundreds of far-flung parts of America, I understand why a country this big needs such an ambitious show,” Dokoupil said in a statement. “Our strength as a country is that we benefit from fair reporting and open discussion of all ideas.
“For more than 60 years, the Evening News has been a cornerstone of that process. I’m honored to join the fearless team at this critical time. What I can promise you is a commitment to trust and plain truth.”
“CBS Evening News” airs weekdays at 6:30pm ET on CBS and is also available to stream on Paramount+.
