The Toyota BZ4X is the first mass-produced electric SUV for North America. Toyota sold just 9,329 BZ4X models in 2023 and 18,570 people in 2024. To put that number into perspective, Hyundai sold 33,918 IONIQ 5 small electric SUV models in 2023 and 44,400 models in 2024.
The BZ4X hasn’t been a huge success compared to its class rivals, but Toyota is breathing new life into its nameplate. Greetings to BZ, who claims that Toyota will offer “more range, more technology, more driving acceleration.”
Toyota BZ4X is missing by rivals
When the Toyota BZ4X first hit the scene in 2022, competition in the small electric SUV segment was already fierce. Tesla sells model YS like pancakes internationally, and Volkswagen was on the heels with a Volkswagen ID4.
Hyundai Motor Company’s Hyundai and Kia brands both launched small electric SUVs: Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Even the blue oval took part in action with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Despite being a global leader in hybrid vehicle production, Toyota was late to the battery electric vehicle party.
Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda “refused to make EV development a top priority.” According to Forbes. So, by the time the BZ4X was available, there were several options offering more power, range and standard features.
Sales have improved, but the BZ4X is less competitive than some of its biggest rivals. Therefore, the decision was made by Toyota to completely reintroduce the nameplate as the Toyota BZ.
Toyota announces new names and major upgrades for electric vehicles
2026 Toyota BZ will drop “4x” from its name. This is far from the only change that Japanese companies are making to the only fully electric vehicles in the US market.

According to CNBC, the 2026 Toyota BZ also features an external redesign, a more standard operating range, and several high-tech upgrades. The nameplate has gotten serious updates that make the electric SUV more attractive.
Previous BZ4X models have been easily covered by competitors, as reflected in sales. New design and improved performance specs allow the new BZ to have a better chance of competing with the best models in its segment.
What’s the newest Toyota BZ for 2026?
