Man accidentally drives the iconic Spanish stairs of Rome
An elderly man turned the wrong way and accidentally ran down the iconic Spanish stairs in Rome, Italy.
The fact that the elderly man is wrong led to the defeat of a famous Italian landmark and his car being pulled away.
Italian media reports say an 80-year-old man on his way to work accidentally drove a famous Spanish step in Rome early in the morning of June 17th.
The video not only left the driver slowly navigating down the historic stairs, but also made him unbelieve the sound response of the bystanders.
Police said the man left the vehicle unharmed, and firefighters used a crane to remove the vehicle from the stairs, Italian outlet Il Corriere Della Sera reported.
According to CBS News, while experts from the Ministry of Culture looked into the extent of damage caused by drivers, public access to Spanish stairs was temporarily restricted.
Was the driver affected?
CNN reported that when taken to a local hospital, they tested negative for both alcohol and drug consumption, CNN cited city police.
However, officers said the driver appears to be in a state of confusion, according to Il Corriere Della Sera. He reportedly had a valid driver’s license.
This unique moment was not the first time a vehicle had passed through a historic landmark. In 2022, a Saudi man was charged with damages to his cultural heritage after Maserati was photographed driving the same step.
What are the steps in Spain?
Built between 1723 and 1726, the Spanish staircase leads from the iconic Piazza dei dei Monty, a French abbey church, according to a Roman tourist destination.
The landmark has a total of 135 steps and three different terraces referring to the Holy Trinity or Trinita. Tourists often visit the top of the stairs and enjoy scenic views of Rome.
