President Donald Trump’s new tax law reduces gambling loss deductions and could force some gamblers to pay taxes even if they lose their money.
A Maryland man says he hit a jackpot thanks to a tag he saw in a stranger’s car earlier this month.
The St. Mary County lottery player, about 80 miles southeast of Washington, DC, won $200,000 on five pick games on August 7th. He says he chose five numbers based on tags posted to the track while it was stopped in a red light.
The man who chose to remain anonymous said he saw the license plate during his one-way commute over 70 miles, the Maryland lottery said.
“I went to work and stopped at a red light at Charlotte Hall and noticed the truck tag in 19363,” he said on August 15th after winning the award. “And the rest is history.”
The player said he bought the combination on August 6th and 7th with four $1 straight bets and four $1 boxed bets, according to the release.
After the midday painting on August 7th, he saw the numbers for the winning pick 5 and thought the numbers looked familiar.
“I was craving the air. I was very happy,” he said according to the release.
The man had planned to retire in about a year, so he had planned to use the prize money to renovate the old home of his parents, where he grew up, the Maryland lottery said.
From now on, the man said he plans to continue playing the lottery in the same way – to wait for the number to play until it catches his attention.
Third Base Recaes, a convenience store located on Point Lookout Road in St. Mary County, will also receive a $2,000 bonus as a result of the victory.
