Taylor Swift regained control of her music catalogue six years after the controversy over her master and retired music manager Scooter Brown.
A well-known industry veteran who managed the pop star’s career from Justin Bieber to Ariana Grande, Brown is in the middle of the conflict that pushed Swift up to the four le records of her album.
Swift announced in an emotional letter on her website on Friday, May 30th that every aspect of her career, including videos, concert films, art, photography and unreleased material, is currently under her control.
“To say this is my biggest dream is that I’m actually pretty understated about it,” Swift wrote.
“I’m happy with her,” Brown said in a statement to USA Today on May 30, following the announcement of the Masters.
But Brown’s feelings come after a fierce clash over Swift’s rights to music.
Scooter, Brown Masters controversy, Taylor Swift explained
The journey to owning the rights to Swift’s materials stems from a fierce controversy with Braun in 2019 after purchasing Big Machine Records, the home of Swift’s first six albums. Swift attempted to buy back the master of the time, but Big Machine offered a complicated contract that stripped her of her rights to music.
In 2020, Swift began re-recording the back catalogue, releasing “Taylor’s versions”: “Fearless”, “Red”, “Speak Now” and “1989”. Her current label, Republic Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, has released all of her albums since she started with “Lover” in 2019.
Brown then tried to address the elephants in the room at various points.
In an interview with Billboard in 2019, Brown said he first met Swift when his client (client) took on a fearless tour in 2010. That same night, Brown met Scott Volchetta.
“We were similar,” Brown told the Billboard of Swift. “Everyone on the big machine – Taylor was nice. Scott was nice. When we were doing that show, everyone was nice to me and Justin. You won’t forget them.
However, the friendship was not extended after the sale of her master, and Swift denounced Brown for “constant manipulative bullying” and called her “worst-case scenario” her “worst-case scenario” in a lengthy Tumblr post aimed at shedding light on fan conflict.
At one point in 2024, Brown posted on Instagram a Max documentary, “Taylor Swift vs Scooter Brown: Bad Brown,” detailing the duo’s long-term feud, saying, “finally” and “finally saw it.” He took another step with his Instagram story by reshaping TMZ posts about star-studded celebrity Bash hosted by Swift for his best friend and “It’ll End With Us” actress Blake Lively. He captioned his Instagram story. “Why wasn’t I invited to this?!?” Added the hashtag “#Laughalittle.”
Brown retired as music manager in 2024, the year after it was revealed that many of Brown’s A-list clients had broken up with him.
Taylor Swift’s Shamrock Capital Music Purchase allows her to own the Master
Swift has given Shamrock Capital, a private equity company that purchased master rights to Swift’s first six albums from Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in 2020, giving him the opportunity to purchase every aspect of her career work.
“What I’ve always wanted was an opportunity to work hard enough to one day make it possible to purchase my music completely without attaching it to its full autonomy,” she writes.
“I was very heartfelt with the conversations that this saga has rekindled with artists and fans in my industry,” she wrote, noting that she is proud of the new artist who will negotiate on a contract and own a master recording.
Swift ended her notes with total joy.
“The best thing that’s ever been mine… and it’s finally actually.”
