After the glacier collapsed in nearby mountains, Swiss alpine villages were buried in a huge field of debris. Reuters reports that 90% of Switzerland’s Bratzen are wrapped in ice, mud and rock after scientists suspect it is a dramatic indication of the impact of climate change on mountainous regions.
The 300-person community was evacuated before the Birch Glacier collapsed, but at least one 64-year-old man is still missing. Police halted their search efforts on May 29, citing the instability of the fragments. The videos, satellite images, maps and photos below show how the disaster unfolded.
