Former Harvard University President Larry Summers plans to resign from his position as a lecturer at Harvard University effective immediately as the university investigates his ties to child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, according to the Harvard Crimson, the university’s student newspaper.

A spokesperson for Mr. Summers told The Crimson on Nov. 19, “His co-teachers plan to complete the remaining three classes of the course he has been teaching this semester, and he will not be teaching next semester.”

Earlier in the day, Summers announced he was stepping back from official university duties in the wake of new revelations about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, but he plans to continue teaching and recently spoke out about the Epstein issue with students.

“Some of you may have seen my statement of remorse expressing my shame for what I did in my communications with Mr. Epstein,” Summers told a group of students in a video posted online.

Emails released by the House Oversight Committee on November 12, including emails between Summers and Epstein dating back to 2019, have brought scrutiny to Summers. The volley of messages showed Summers corresponding with the disgraced investor on a variety of topics, and also seeking advice about his love life.

He also resigned from the board of technology company OpenAI. On November 17, Mr. Summers announced that he was withdrawing from public service in light of the emails. Mr. Summers served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton and then as president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006.

Summers will also immediately take a leave of absence from his role as director of the Mossabah Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, which he has led since 2011, The Crimson reported.
