Canadian auto workers caught in trade war as Jeep moves cars to Illinois
Stellantis announced a $13 billion investment in the United States, and the company is now moving production out of Canada and reopening a factory in Illinois.
Stellantis plans to discontinue all plug-in hybrid vehicle models in 2026, including several popular Jeep models.
The multinational automaker, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, announced in a statement provided to the USA TODAY Cars team on January 9 that it will discontinue hybrid vehicles from “all brands in North America starting with the 2026 model year.”
The decision comes after several major automakers, including Stellantis’ biggest rival in Detroit, have all pulled back on previous EV plans. Manufacturers cited a change in the federal government’s stance on plug-in vehicles under President Donald Trump, which resulted in the elimination of federal tax credits for EVs and an attempt to roll back investment support for chargers.
The move also comes as Cox Automotive recently noted that Stellantis will be replaced as the top U.S.-based hybrid seller by Mercedes-Benz in the third quarter of 2025.
