A Spanish rescue team is looking for an American hiker who has been missing in the Pyrenees for eight days.
At Ordesay Monteperdido National Park in northern Spain, a mountain rescue team and helicopter specializing in aviation services are looking for Cole Henderson, 27, a Guardia citizen told CNN on Wednesday.
Henderson was last asked on July 9, Henderson’s friend Max Senov said in a Facebook post released Tuesday.
He parked his car and texted him saying he was turning the phone in plane mode and starting the hike. He hasn’t been heard since.
Henderson was reported missing on July 14th.
Authorities discovered Henderson’s car in Torra, the western town of the national park, Guardia citizens said.
Senov stands 11,007 feet (3,355 meters) thinking he might have been trying to climb Monte Perdido, the third highest peak in the Pyrenees.
Social media footage shows the usual route from Tora, where Henderson’s car was parked, and is still covered in snow in early July.
The route is rated “Peu Difficile” (PD), meaning “somewhat difficult” by the climbing community. PD routes are often climbed without ropes, but they can include steep sections of climbing and crevass glaciers, and often require special equipment such as ice shafts and brampons.
According to his social media profile, Henderson attended St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware, where he studied computer science at Roads College, Tennessee.
