Phasing down most paper checks for federal benefits
The federal government will begin phased out social security and other federal payment paper checks by September 30th.

The first wave of Social Security payments for October is expected to be sent to the winners this week, marking the first this month under the agency’s new paperless policy.
Starting in October, most recipients will need to install direct deposits in their bank accounts or use a direct high-speed card.
The change from paper checks to direct deposits comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order after he ended the issuance of paper checks by the federal government in March and ended the compliance deadline of September 30th.

Who will receive Social Security payments this week?
According to the SSA payment calendar, beneficiaries born between the first and tenth days of the month of birth will receive monthly Social Security benefits on Wednesday, October 8th.
When will Social Security payments be sent?
Social Security benefits are paid primarily to older or retired recipients, but are usually paid on Wednesdays.
According to the SSA calendar, if the recipient’s birth date is between the first and tenth of the month, a regular payment will be issued on the second Wednesday of the payment month. Recipients born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on the third Wednesday, while those born after the 20th of the month will be paid on the fourth Wednesday.
Those who receive Social Security by May 1997 can expect to pay on the third day of the month, unless they do not pass on weekends or holidays.
Those who receive both Social Security and Supplementary Security Income (SSI) can expect to pay Social Security on the third day of the month and SSI on the first day of the month.

The winners of the Supplemental Security Income Check were set to receive payments on the first business day of the month, which took place on October 1, 2025.
According to the SSA calendar, the SSI check will be sent on the next dates in 2025 and early 2026.
