Karen DeBoer explains pulling Ty Simpson late
Karen DeBoer talked about why Ty Simpson was benched in the second half and what led to that decision.
Alabama football lost in embarrassing fashion in the Rose Bowl.
In one of the Crimson Tide’s worst losses and performances in the Cullen DeBoer era, No. 1 Indiana defeated No. 9 Alabama 38-3 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal Rose Bowl on Thursday, January 1st.
The Crimson Tide was held to just a third-quarter field goal and 193 yards of total offense by the Hoosiers’ defense this afternoon. Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson was injured after taking a hit in the second quarter and was benched in the third quarter by DeBoer in what ESPN called a “coach’s decision.”
The Crimson Tide’s 35-point loss is the fourth-largest loss in College Football Playoff history.
The loss to Alabama means the Crimson Tide has lost four games in a row under DeBoer, something that hasn’t happened in Tuscaloosa since the 2006 and 2007 seasons, the latter of which was Nick Saban’s first season as head coach.
Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns for the Hoosiers, their first bowl win since the 1991 Copper Bowl. The Hoosiers will advance to the CFP semifinals against No. 5 Oregon State on Friday, Jan. 9, and the Peach Bowl.
Considering the Hoosiers’ dominance and the ugliness of the Crimson Tide’s performance in the Rose Bowl, college football social media didn’t hold back. Here are excerpts of reactions to the CFP quarterfinal match results:
