How to measure snowfall
The National Weather Service relies on volunteers to measure snowfall totals during winter storms across the country.
To create your own measuring tool, known as a snow measuring board, use a piece of plywood approximately 24 by 24 inches. Make sure it’s about 3/8 to 0.5 inch thick to reduce the chance of it blowing away.
Place snowboards on the ground before it snows. To measure, push the ruler into the snow until it hits the snow measuring plate. Record measurements to the nearest tenth of an inch.
Those who don’t have a snow meter can track totals on surfaces like picnic tables or wooden decks, as long as they’re not near roofs where blown snow can accumulate.
