Shutdown, New York City ICE, cola, peanut allergy, Malala, Luka Doncic, NBA: Daily Briefing

Date:

Happy mid-week!🙋🏼‍♀️ I’m Nicole Fallato. Trying to be as calm as the cat rescuers.

Let’s take a quick look at Wednesday’s news.

  • The government shutdown has just reached a milestone.
  • Immigration authorities targeted street vendors in New York City.
  • The lack of cane sugar in the United States is putting pressure on new cola sales.

Will the shutdown be bad for the economy?

The government shutdown continues Wednesday, at 22 days, the second longest after President Donald Trump’s first term in 2017, when it lasted for 35 days. And with no end in sight, Democrats and Republicans in Congress remain locked in a bitter stalemate. The shutdown furloughed 750,000 federal employees, forced air traffic controllers and other essential workers to work without pay, and closed national parks, federal offices and museums. Still, many of the government’s economic machinery remain operational. But some forecasters have warned that the latest shutdown could be more economically damaging than some previous instances.

Federal agents swoop into New York City in immigration raid

On Tuesday afternoon, masked agents handcuffed people along Canal Street, a popular tourist hub in Manhattan’s Chinatown district.

Protests broke out in the area. Traffic was stopped and bystanders recorded the incident on their cellphones as officers detained people.

  • It is unclear how many people were detained. Dozens of operatives swarmed the area with military vehicles, and Murad Awaoudeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, told USA TODAY that operatives used batons and mace on protesters. Homeland Security officials said the raid “focused on criminal activity related to the sale of counterfeit goods.”
  • More from New York: Early voting begins this weekend, and New York City mayoral candidates are preparing for the second and final debate scheduled for Wednesday.

Your Coca-Cola is different.

Coca-Cola is launching a new cane sugar soda after President Trump publicly urged the company to stop using high fructose corn syrup earlier this year. The Atlanta-based company confirmed in an email to USA TODAY that it has begun introducing 12-ounce single-use glass bottles of Classic Soda, made with U.S.-grown sugar, in “select U.S. markets.” However, supply chain challenges have limited deployment.

Are peanut-free diets gone forever?

New research is hopeful: Peanut allergies are on the decline. New research shows we may be on the way to eliminating peanut allergies, which have been a problem and even deadly for decades. This study shows that peanut allergy rates among adolescents decreased in the years following guidance in 2017 that proposed introducing peanuts into infant diets as a means of allergy prevention. Lesson learned: To keep allergies at bay, give your baby peanut products around 4 to 6 months of age.

today’s speaker

Yes, Malala smoked marijuana in college.

“I know my story has been in the popular media for a very long time, and some people still read the old story of the 15-year-old girl who was shot and killed by the Taliban, and she’s defined as brave and resilient and all that. But I want the real story to come out.”

~ Malala Yousafzai tells USA TODAY that her new memoir, “Finding My Way,” reintroduces herself at 28 years old. Recently, she visited USA TODAY’s New York studio to crack jokes about toxic boys and show off her memes on TikTok.

Luka Doncic started his first full season on Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors in their season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. And he’s making us all sick.
