The University of Michigan football team has fired coach Sherone Moore for cause, the school announced on Wednesday, December 10th.

“The university’s investigation found credible evidence that Coach Moore had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Michigan athletic director Ward Manuel said in a statement. “This behavior is a clear violation of university policy, and UM will not tolerate such behavior.”

According to the announcement, assistant Biff Poggi, who served as interim head coach for the University of Michigan against Central Michigan and Nebraska this season, will serve as interim coach. Moore was unavailable for coaching duties because he was serving a two-game suspension stemming from an NCAA investigation following the program’s sign-stealing scandal.

Moore just completed his second season as the replacement for Jim Harbaugh, who left the Wolverines for the Los Angeles Chargers after winning the national championship. Moore went 18-8 as head coach and led the University of Michigan to a 9-3 mark in 2025, finishing the regular season 18th in the College Football Playoff voting.

It’s unfortunate timing for the University of Michigan that the coaching merry-go-round is coming to an end. The Wolverines’ options could be limited as each position in the Power Four is currently filled and several big-name coaches have signed extensions at their current schools.

Moore was accused of deleting text messages with former University of Michigan analyst Connor Stallions, who engineered the show’s sign-stealing scandal. As a result, Moore was suspended for three games, with two games in 2025 and one more game in 2026. Moore previously served a voluntary one-game suspension in 2023 for his involvement in recruiting violations unrelated to sign stealing.

The 39-year-old coach began his tenure at Michigan as the tight ends coach in 2018 and was later promoted to co-offensive coordinator, a role he held from 2021-22. He was then promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 and called plays for the Wolverines’ undefeated national championship team.

Moore began his career as an assistant at the University of Louisville after finishing his playing career as a backup offensive lineman at the University of Oklahoma. He also coached at Central Michigan before being hired by Michigan.

The University of Michigan will face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31st at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
