- Sen. Adam Schiff has established the Legal Defense Fund as he faces an investigation by the Trump administration.
WASHINGTON – Sen. Adam Schiff, president Donald Trump’s longtime political enemy, supports ongoing legal combat and “bassed smears” from the administration by establishing a legal defense fund.
Trump was called a “shifty” and “con man” to be arrested for treason after leading the first round each during his first term as president. The Justice Department is investigating potential mortgage fraud that Schiff has denied.
Schiff established an August 15th tax-free fund called the “Senate Schiff Legal Defense Fund.” It is not clear how much the fund raised in the first place.
“It is clear that Donald Trump and his Magazine allies will continue to continue the judicial process as arms to attack Senator Sif to hold this corrupt administration accountable,” said Marisol Samayoa, Sif spokesman. “This fund ensures that he can fight these unfounded smears while continuing his work.”
Schiff’s political and legal battle with Trump goes back many years.
As a member of the House, a former federal prosecutor led the first bounce against Trump on his deal with Ukraine during his first term. Schiff also joined the committee that investigated the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.
After winning a Senate seat in 2024, Schiff remains critical of Trump. For example, he asked the Federal Communications Commission on August 15 if Trump asked for a media coverage commitment in exchange for Skydance Media’s approval for the merger of CBS’ parent company Paramount Global.
Paramount was approved after CBS News agreed to pay $16 million to resolve a $20 billion lawsuit from Trump, which he allegedly miscompiled a “60-minute” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris in his 2024 campaign against Trump.
Trump has been asking for Schiff’s investigation since returning to the White House this year.
In July, Trump said on social media that federal authorities “concluded that Adam Schiff is engaged in a persistent pattern of possible mortgage fraud.” The blame is that Schiff insisted on a major Maryland residence to get cheaper mortgage interest rates, in addition to his California residence needed to serve in Congress.
Trump allegedly began the fraud in 2009 when Schiff refinanced his Maryland home until he designated his second residence in 2020.
“I’ve always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a con man,” Trump told social media.
Schiff denied the fraud and called the mortgage investigation “a bit disappointed” after a more serious allegation Trump levelled with him. According to sources familiar with the declaration, Schiff consulted with House lawyers and mortgage lenders in 2003, declaring that his Maryland home had occupied “major residences” rather than vacation or investment property in addition to his California residence.
“And this unfounded attempt at political retaliation will not stop me from holding him accountable,” Schiff told social media in July. “It’s not a long shot.”
The mortgage investigation comes after Schiff opposed Ed Martin, a U.S. prosecutor in Washington, D.C. Martin retreated and was appointed to the Department of Justice position that does not require confirmation from the Senate.
“The allegations against Senator Sif are transparently false, old and shaking for a long time,” said Preet Ballarala, Sif’s lawyer. “Now, the bravest partisan and politically compromised person possible for this job, Ed Martin has been chosen to investigate his political opponent.”
Trump signaled another investigation into Schiff on an investigation into Trump’s deal with Russia during his term. Special Advisor Robert Mueller discovered that Russians tried to influence the 2016 election in favor of the election but found no connection to Trump’s campaign.
FBI Director Kash Patel recently declassified and released an FBI interview memo from former House Intelligence Committee staff in 2017, who first accused Schiff of directing illegal leaks of confidential information about Trump and Russia.
Schiff’s office said Patel’s “latest smear” was “absolute and decisively false” to distract him from Trump’s falling votes. The prosecutor considered the charges of the then officials and refused to pursue the charges. A Justice Department inspector considered the charges in a 2024 report that determined that witnesses had “looked little support for their claims” and “may not have been trusted.”
But Trump told reporters at the Kennedy Center on August 13 that he hoped something would be done to Schiff about the Russian investigation he called “fake” and “hoax.”
“These people put our country in great danger and Adam Schiff was all in place,” Trump said after seeing Attorney General Pam Bondy. “Hopefully something will happen.”
