What the SAVE Act means for voting
The Republican-led House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill backed by President Donald Trump that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
The bill, known as the SAVE America Act, would require voters to present a government-issued photo ID to vote. Independent experts and voting rights groups say this factor could prevent millions of Americans from voting due to gaps in access to ID.
Another factor for Americans is that millions of women whose married names don’t match the last names on their birth certificates or passports could face additional hurdles to registering to vote or voting, according to the Brennan Center.
The bill faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Senate. President Trump has indicated he intends to sign the bill if it is fully passed.
