Savannah Guthrie shares rare insight into her ‘horrible’ divorce

Savannah Guthrie plans to start 2026 with a focus on health.
During the Dec. 19 broadcast, Guthrie revealed that the 53-year-old longtime “Today” show host will be taking a short break from his NBC morning talk show in the new year to undergo vocal cord surgery.
“Some of you may have noticed that my voice is very rough and starting to crack a little bit,” Guthrie said. “Well, I know what it is. I have vocal cord nodules and now I also have polyps.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, vocal cord lesions are tumors that can form on one or both vocal cords, usually as a result of overuse or misuse of a person’s voice.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a vocal cord nodule, a type of vocal cord lesion, is a callus-like growth that occurs at the midpoint of the vocal cord. These are common among singers and speakers. Vocal cord polyps, on the other hand, are usually larger lesions than nodules.
Treatments for vocal cord lesions include voice therapy, surgery, and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, reducing stress and improving diet, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“It’s not a big deal, but I’m going to have surgery in the new year and have to take a few weeks off,” Guthrie said. “Then today is your last day for a little while.”
USA TODAY has reached out to Guthrie’s representatives for comment.
Guthrie said she was “really excited” about the diagnosis, having struggled with the symptoms for years despite her declining health.
Guthrie’s “Today” co-host Shinelle Jones, who has had the same surgery before, joked, “Maybe you’ll come out singing like, I don’t know, Celine Dion.”
“Well, it’s really funny, I used to sing a lot too,” Guthrie said. “After that, I couldn’t sing anymore, and I couldn’t even talk anymore. So, you guys, you never know. The tour will take place in 2026.”
