A GoFundMe campaign supporting the family of Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis woman who was shot and killed by an ICE officer on January 7, has ended with more than $1.5 million raised.
The campaign was launched hours after Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed in a Honda Pilot SUV during an immigration raid in a residential neighborhood near her home in Minneapolis.
After the campaign raised $1,503,533 from more than 38,500 donations, organizers posted a note thanking donors for their generosity. “We will be closing this GoFundMe and placing the funds in a trust for the benefit of the family,” the memo said. “If you would like to donate, we encourage you to support those in need. We really appreciate it.”
The GoFundMe page also has been updated with a statement from Good’s wife, Rebecca Good, to Minnesota Public Radio, in which she said they were at the scene of the operation because Renee Good “stopped to assist a neighbor” before she was shot. “We had whistles. They had guns,” Rebecca Good said.
Nationwide protests planned after Renee Good shooting death
More than 1,000 anti-ICE protests are planned across the United States on Saturday, January 10th and Sunday, January 11th in the wake of Goode’s shooting.
At the same time, additional videos showing ICE officers’ perspectives on the incident did not seem to calm tensions about the cause of the shooting.
Vice President J.D. Vance said the video showed the officers acted in self-defense, but critics, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, thought the new video showed Goode’s shooting was unjustified.
Also on Friday, January 9, court records identified the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer involved in the shooting as Jonathan Ross, a U.S. Army veteran and former Border Patrol agent.
Renee Good’s wife says “kindness came through”
Rebecca Goode also thanked donors to the fund in a statement.
“First, I would like to thank everyone who has reached out from across the country and around the world to support our family,” Good said. “This kindness from a stranger is the most fitting compliment, because if you’ve ever met my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiates from her.”
According to the Washington Post, Renee Good was a mother of three, a 15-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 12 and 6. She lived just a few blocks from the scene of the shooting, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.
“Renee leaves behind three special children. Her youngest is only 6 years old and has already lost his father,” Rebecca Good continued in her statement. “I’m now left to raise my son and continue to teach him what Renee believed, that there are people who are building a better world for him. The people who did this have fear and anger in their hearts, and we need to show them a better way.”
Renee Good’s name is listed in more than 20 other GoFundMe campaigns. The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that the fundraising site’s Trust and Safety team is reviewing all fundraising efforts related to the Minneapolis shooting.
