LOS ANGELES — Reba McIntyre’s love life rule #1: Don’t believe everything you see on TV.
Season 2 of NBC’s comedy “Happy’s Place” begins Nov. 7 (ET/8 PT), but McIntyre’s Tavern co-owner Bobby and Rex Lynn’s short-order chef Emmett are still just characters. promising couple.
In fact, McIntyre, 70, and Lynn, 68, are totally in love and engaged. The proof is in the rose gold engagement ring McIntyre wears while sitting at Bobby’s kitchen table on the set of “Happy’s Place” in Universal City, California.
Lin pulled out a ring surrounded by black diamonds and knelt down to present it on Christmas Eve 2024.
“It always shines. It doesn’t matter that you think it’s never been cleaned,” McIntyre told USA TODAY. “It’s so much fun. I feel like a teenager again,” she declares of her life. “It really is a wonderful time.”
Seven months after celebrating his 70th birthday in March, McIntyre is firing on all cylinders. With one win in four seasons, “The Voice” star is a senior coach on season 28 of the NBC reality singing competition, along with Michael Bublé, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg. McEntire and Lynn are wrapping up Season 2 of “Happy’s Place” a short golf cart ride from “The Voice” on the grounds of the famous Universal Studios.
His engagement to Lynn, which the two announced on the Emmy Awards red carpet in September, is the highlight.
“I’m 70 years old, I’ve been in business for 50 years, and I’m happier now than I’ve ever been in my life,” McIntyre says. “God saved the best for last.”
The inseparable couple commute together from their home in Los Angeles and rehearse “Happy’s Place” together late into the night.
“We’re great rehearsal partners. We go to bed with the script and wake up with the script,” McIntyre says. “But many mornings we sit outside and watch the hummingbirds while drinking coffee.”
The two have a daily morning ritual called “coffee camp” that is essential no matter where they are, whether in person or on a Zoom call.
“In the morning, as I’m shuffling down the hallway to go to coffee camp, Rex says, ‘You’re the most beautiful woman in the world,'” McIntyre says. “And I say, ‘Okay, put your glasses back on.'”
The two first met as friendly co-stars while filming the 1991 TV movie The Gambler Returns, and reunited 30 years later when McIntyre booked a guest appearance on Young Sheldon, in which Lynn played Principal Petersen. After a reunion dinner, they’ve hit it off ever since.
When “Happy’s Place” began, Bobby and Emmett weren’t necessarily supposed to strike up a romance at the TV bar with co-owner Isabella (Belissa Escoveda) and bartender Gabby (“Reba” star Melissa Peterman).
“But that’s what the fans expect,” McIntyre said. “‘This is real, let’s see it on the show.'”
Life is dizzyingly ahead of TV romance. Still, McIntyre promises “hot moments” and not just from Emmett’s grill. “But we’re going to tease you with a little romance,” she says. “The hijinks will follow.”
Rex Lin’s proposal: “I want to cross the finish line with you.”
December’s proposal already contained enough sexy adventures for future seasons. Lin secretly picked out the ring at a jewelry store in Austin and carried it in her pocket throughout an African safari in June 2024.
“But that opportunity never presented itself,” McIntyre said. “He took (the ring) home.”
On December 23rd, Lynn searched for the perfect spot near her favorite stream on a 130-acre ranch 60 miles outside of Nashville. During a walk on Christmas Eve, he surprised McIntyre by taking a knee.
“I said, ‘What are you doing?’ And he said, ‘Will you marry me?’ I want to cross the finish line with you,” McIntyre said, cradling Lin’s head but not immediately answering. “He said, ‘I didn’t say anything!’” And I finally said, “Right!” Yes! He thought he would have to jump into the stream. ”
Lynn later admitted that the silence after McIntyre’s proposal was “about 21 seconds. And even the five seconds of silence felt like an hour.”
“I thought if she didn’t say yes, I was going to disappear into that stream,” Lynn says. “But then she said ‘yes’ three times.”
The couple kept quiet about the celebration due to the Los Angeles fires that broke out in January. The couple hasn’t made any concrete plans for their wedding, partly because McIntyre’s calendar is packed.
“She has 13 days of free time in 2026,” Lin said. “Right now we’re just enjoying our engagement. Once we have a date, we’ll pick a date.”
McIntyre, who divorced her second husband Narvel Blackstock in 2015, says she is “happy and content”. And real-life romances and TV romances are touching.
“I’m hearing from people I haven’t heard from in years saying, ‘Oh my gosh, you gave me hope. Maybe there’s someone out there who can help me,'” McIntyre says. “Everyone wants to see people fall in love and be happy.”
