Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, the federal government’s scientific data and computing power will help fuel the artificial intelligence boom.
A Nov. 24 executive order created the Genesis mission, which the Trump administration has described as one of the nation’s largest “consolidations of federal science resources.”
Administration officials said AI companies will have access to scientific datasets held by the government, which runs 17 national laboratories through the Department of Energy. The institute conducts cutting-edge research and is equipped with some of the most advanced supercomputers in the world.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the goal is to use AI for “scientific discovery.”
“And to do that, we need datasets across national laboratories,” Wright said, adding, “This will accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and innovation tremendously.”
The order also directs the administration to build a computing platform to integrate AI with national laboratory infrastructure and establish a set of priorities for scientific discovery, White House officials said.
The order comes amid a wave of AI investment, with technology companies pouring billions into developing AI models and the infrastructure needed to support them.
Businesses need datasets to train their models. Federal data represents another source of information.
It involves concerns about access to copyrighted and sensitive materials that could impact national security. Officials say controls will be put in place to protect this data.
After a once-frozen relationship with Silicon Valley, President Trump has the backing of many tech leaders in his second term and has taken a friendly approach to the industry, promoting cryptocurrencies, warning foreign countries against imposing high-tech regulations, and pushing ahead with plans for U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence while repealing former President Joe Biden’s AI regulations.
The White House was also considering an executive order that would pre-empt state laws on artificial intelligence through litigation and withholding federal funds, but put that order on hold, Reuters reported.
