Russia warns of US weapons deployment to Greenland
With the New START Treaty expiring, Russia is preparing to react if the United States deploys its Golden Dome missile defense program to Greenland.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on February 21 that he is working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to send a hospital ship to Greenland, a Danish territory that Trump is seeking to capture.
President Trump announced the plan on social media shortly before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House, where he sat next to Landry for a conversation.
“Working with our wonderful Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a big hospital ship to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick and cannot be treated there. It’s happening right now!!!” Trump said.
Neither the White House nor Mr. Landry’s office responded to questions for this post about whether the ship had been requested by Denmark or Greenland or which sick people needed help. There was no immediate comment from the Department of the Army.
Denmark’s King Frederik visited Greenland last week for the second time in a year, in an attempt to show solidarity with Greenland against President Trump’s push to buy the land.
Greenland, Denmark and the United States held talks late last month to resolve the situation after months of tensions within the NATO defense alliance.
Trump’s post came hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command announced it had evacuated a crew member in need of emergency medical treatment from a U.S. submarine in Greenland waters, seven nautical miles from Greenland’s capital Nuuk.
It’s unclear what Landry has to do with the incident or if the post has anything to do with the evacuation.
The U.S. Navy has two hospital ships, the Mercy and the Comfort, but neither is stationed in Louisiana.
