President Trump ends trade talks with Canada over President Reagan’s tariff ads
President Donald Trump says he is ending trade negotiations with Canada after he accused President Ronald Reagan of using him in an ad denouncing tariffs and trade wars.
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Saturday announced tariffs on Canada “an additional 10% above what we’re paying now” just two days after ending trade talks with Ottawa, claiming his comments were misleading advertising.
President Trump announced the tariff hike in a post on Truth Social on October 25, referring to an ad aired by the government of Ontario, Canada, featuring a video of the late Republican icon President Ronald Reagan, saying the tariffs would cause a trade war and economic disaster.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday that Canada is ready to resume trade talks with the United States.
The U.S. Department of Commerce, the White House and Carney’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
