The democratic socialist mayor of New York and the Republican president have had a surprisingly friendly relationship.
Zoran Mamdani says he called Trump to protest Maduro’s arrest
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani said he called President Trump to voice his opposition to the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
NEW YORK – President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani were scheduled to meet in Washington, DC, on February 26, according to reports.
Details of the meeting were not listed on public schedules at the White House or New York City Hall. USA TODAY has reached out to City Hall and the White House for comment.
The New York Post first reported on the planned meeting, citing unnamed sources, saying Mamdani was seen on a Delta flight on the morning of February 26. The New York Times reported that the mayor made an unannounced visit to Washington, citing three anonymous sources familiar with Mamdani’s plans.
Mamdani’s public schedule, announced late on February 25, did not include any public events. Mamdani was not on the official White House schedule.
In his State of the Union address on February 24, President Trump mentioned Mamdani, a democratic socialist who has a surprisingly friendly relationship with the Republican president.
“I think the new communist mayor of New York is actually a good person,” President Trump said in a speech to Congress. “I talk to him a lot. He has bad policies, but he’s a good person.”
The two first met in November at a gathering of friends in the Oval Office.
This is a developing story.
