President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard in Memphis, Tennessee, and continues his aggressive campaign to use the military to combat crime.
Trump previously deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. amid strong criticism from Democrats on those areas and legal agendas, but in Memphis, Trump has targeted Republican-controlled states where the governor welcomed intervention.
Trump signed a memorandum of understanding to bring together members of his administration in the state’s leadership and his elliptical office on September 15th to create the Memphis Safe Task Force. The task force includes the National Guard, the FBI, Homeland Security and other federal forces, Trump said, modelling the DC operation.
“We’re going to make Memphis safe again,” Trump said.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee thanked Trump for committing federal resources to Memphis.
“We are very hopeful and excited about the prospect of moving the city forward,” Lee said, adding that he is “fed up with the crimes that hold a big Memphis city.”
Memphis, which has long struggled with crime, had the highest murder rates and other violent crimes in major cities in the country in 2024, according to a USA Today analysis of FBI data from 30 cities with over half a million residents. Memphis had 40.6 murders per 100,000 people, compared to a percentage of 25.5 per 100,000 in the country’s fifth-ranked capital.
The Democrat Mayor of Memphis criticized Trump’s plan to deploy security guards in his city when the president announced last week.
Trump spoke about deploying security guards in other major cities, including Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans.
“I think Chicago will be next,” he said on September 15th.
