The 5.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Peru’s central coast on Sunday rattled karao in Lima and the port city, killing one person and injuring five, authorities said.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 11:35am local time in the Pacific Ocean. Its epicenter was located 23 kilometres (14 miles) southwest of Karao, west of the capital Lima.
The 36-year-old man died while “standing outside the car waiting for passengers.” Colonel Ramilo Clauko told RPP Radio when a wall from the fourth floor of the building under construction fell on his head isolated.
The five injured people were being treated at the hospital, according to the emergency business center. The agency also reported damages to the roads and education centres.
President Dina Boralto is heading to Karao to monitor development, the Peruvian president said in X.
Video shared by local media also shows falling debris, damaged houses and cars hit by collapsed signs.
All districts in Lima feel that Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Peruvian Institute of Geophysics, felt an earthquake.
Local radio stations reported that professional soccer games at Alberto Garraldo Stadium in Lima have been suspended for several minutes.
Mass at the Cathedral in Lima was also suspended after scared worshippers fled the scene.
Peru is located along the ring of fire along the Pacific Ocean, characterized by frequent earthquakes and active volcanoes.
