The Edmonton Oilers have two things they didn’t have in last year’s Stanley Cup final. It’s the advantage of home ice cream and the lead in the series.
The Oilers’ 4-3 overtime victory in Game 1 means they’ll need to come back if the Florida Panthers are repeated as Stanley Cup champions. Game 2 is Friday night.
“We learn from adversity more than victory,” Panthers’ Carter Werhege told reporters Thursday.
The Panthers blew a second break lead in the playoffs for the first time in three years under manager Paul Maurice. They went out 14-2 in the third term as Edmonton tied the match and worked overtime on Leon Draysightle’s power play goal.
“They dictated more games than we did,” forward Matthew Tokachuk said. “That’s what it is. Go back to the drawings. Try playing better than them (Friday).”

Red Hot Sam Bennett scored on a power play after a Nate Schmidt pass. That’s 13 goals for Bennett in the playoffs. This includes record 12 on the road. The goal ends Edmonton’s first score nine games straight. The Oilers are angry that Bennett kicked out Matthias Ekholm’s stick from him.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice has launched the Alexander Barkov line, while Oilers coach Chris Noblauch has rebutted the Leon Drysightle line.
