We’ve had a busy week. Welcome to the daily briefing. This morning’s breaking news is:
nicole farato here! This weekend I’m watching “People I Meet on Vacation.” Friday’s headlines are about two separate shootings involving federal agents, an oil conference and the “God of the Quad” coming to the Olympics.
Week of mass shootings by federal agents
Two people were injured in a shooting involving federal agents in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, with local leaders and police pleading for calm after tensions escalated this week after Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot in the head by a federal immigration agent in a residential area south of downtown Minneapolis, authorities said. Vice President J.D. Vance also said that the ongoing tightening of immigration enforcement is just the beginning.
Here’s the latest from USA TODAY:
- We know the FBI agent who shot Good. In court documents, the enforcement operations officer is identified as Jonathan Ross of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. USA TODAY asked experts whether Ross’ use of force was justified.
- Minnesota authorities are not aware of the incident. Minnesota authorities announced Thursday that the FBI has notified them that they will no longer have access to “case materials, scene evidence, and interrogation.”
- “Minneapolis is angry”: Local schools were closed. Thousands of dollars poured into Good’s family. Anti-ICE protests continue. But neighbors who monitor ICE say they are not deterred (recording ICE? Know your rights).
