President Trump’s approval rating was 42% in the poll, the highest level since October.
President Trump criticizes Venezuela after Maduro attack: ‘We are responsible’
President Donald Trump says he is “in charge” of Venezuela after US special forces captured President Nicolas Maduro.
WASHINGTON – One in three Americans supports a U.S. military strike to remove Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from office as he faces federal drug trafficking charges, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on January 5.
In contrast, 72% of respondents are concerned about the United States becoming too involved in the South American country.
The two-day poll showed sharp partisan divides over the raids ordered by President Donald Trump, with his approval rating at 42%. The results showed that 65% of Republicans supported military operations, compared to 11% of Democrats and 23% of independents.
President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty in federal court in New York on January 5 to charges of narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and two weapons charges.
“I’m innocent. I’m not guilty. I’m a decent human being. I’m still the president of my country,” Maduro said through an interpreter, but was interrupted by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein.
His lawyer, Barry Pollack, said Maduro intends to contest the legitimacy of the “military abduction.”
The military action against Maduro comes as President Trump speaks of the importance of overthrowing the Cuban government and taking control of Greenland by the United States.
The poll found that 43% of Republicans agreed with the statement that “the United States should have policies that control affairs in the Western Hemisphere,” while 19% disagreed. The rest said they were unsure or did not answer the question.
The poll of 1,248 adults conducted on January 4th and 5th showed President Trump’s approval rating at 42%, the highest since October. The results of the online opinion polls each showed a difference of 3 percentage points.
