An Ohio jury has acquitted a police officer of murder and other charges in the 2023 shooting death of a pregnant woman accused of shoplifting from a grocery store.

A Franklin County jury reached its verdict Nov. 21 in the case of Connor Grubb, accused in the shooting death of 21-year-old Takiya Young, after deliberating about eight hours over two days. She was approximately six months pregnant at the time of her death.

Grubb is charged with multiple counts of manslaughter, felonious assault and murder, and faces a possible life sentence. During the trial, Judge Young dismissed four charges against Mr. Grubb, all related to the death of Mr. Young’s unborn child, because the prosecution had not presented supporting evidence.

On August 24, 2023, Grubb shot and killed Takiya Young during an exchange that lasted approximately 10 seconds. It was started by Sergeant Brendon Township. Eric Moynihan, who was helping a woman who was locked out of her car, was flagged down by a Kroger employee in the store’s parking lot.

The employee told Moynihan that a woman had stolen from the store, pointed to Young’s car and identified her as the suspect. Moynihan testified that he approached the driver’s side window and told Young to turn off the car’s engine and get out of the car. Young refused.

Body camera video shows Grubb walking in front of Young’s car, which then moves forward and hits him. Images and video released during Mr. Grubb’s trial show him taking his feet off the ground when he fired the single shot that struck Young.

Ms. Young was the mother of two sons, ages 6 and 3 at the time of her death. Young was pregnant with her daughter when she was shot, and her family said she was due to give birth in November of that year. Her death led to several peaceful vigils held in her memory and in honor of her unborn daughter.

Grubb is currently on unpaid leave from the Brendon Township Police Department, which previously announced there would be no internal investigation into the shooting until the criminal case is concluded.

Young’s estate has also filed a civil lawsuit against Grubb, Brendon Township and Kroger.
