  • Former President Obama has expressed his support for California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed district change plan.
  • Newsom’s plan is subject to Texas or other Republican-led states, and has enacted similar rezoning operations.
  • Texas Republicans are poised to vote for a new Congressional map aimed at turning five democratically held House seats upside down.

Former President Barack Obama is talking about the California district change plan proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. And he’s all for that.

During a fundraiser for the National Democratic Constituency Commission held at Martha’s Vineyard on August 19, Obama said he considers Newsom’s strategy a “responsible approach.” California voters can decide on their district change options in November.

Quoting Newsom, Obama said, “I said this is totally responsible. We’re not going to maximize it completely.” “We’re going to do that only if Texas and other Republican states start to pull these maneuvers, otherwise this won’t be enforced.”

Obama’s remarks come as Texas Republicans are expected to vote for a new Congress map aimed at turning five democratically held US House seats for Grab in the 2026 election. The vote comes after dozens of Democrats ended their two-week strike and temporarily delayed the passage of the bill during a special session in the state legislature.

“I want to see people in Texans reject what’s going on, but unlike California, it doesn’t look like… They’re given the option to decide whether this is something to do or not,” Obama reported on August 20.

In response, Newsom thanked Obama on social media on August 20, saying the state must stop President Trump’s “attempts to equip us with our election.”

“California will redraw our map and neutralize Donald Trump’s attempts to steal Congress’ seats,” Newsom said. “Thank you President Obama for supporting Prop. 50 and for standing up to American democracy.”

Meanwhile, Trump continues to encourage members of the Texas GOP House to do his part in securing a map of the new rezoning.

“…This is exactly why Texas Republicans need to help win the 2026 midterm elections, and that’s why they need to pass a new bill for one big and beautiful map of Congress!” Trump said in a Truth Social Post on August 19.
