A Norwegian Cruise Line ship has rescued more than 60 people in the Ionian Sea.
The cruise line’s Norwegian Epic responded to a search and rescue operation with Greek authorities on October 22 and safely rescued “63 people,” the company said.
“These individuals were brought onboard and cared for by the ship’s crew, who provided medical evaluations, meals, and other items to keep them comfortable,” Norwegian’s captain told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “Following enforcement orders from the Rescue Coordination Center, the ship proceeded to Kalamata, Greece, where the rescued people were handed over to the Greek authorities.”
The cruise company did not reveal who the rescued people were. Greek authorities did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
According to Cruise Mapper, the ship was scheduled to depart from Civitavecchia, Italy, on October 21 and make port calls in Greece, Malta, Italy and France. The ship then resumed sailing.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this unexpected travel disruption,” Norwegian added.
The news comes after a Holland America Line ship rescued two people from a wrecked sailboat in August during a cruise from Boston to Quebec City, Canada.
