National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall on October 1st for the 2021-2022 Nissan Leaf model equipped with a Level 3 quick charging port due to the risk of a battery fire.

Nissan North America is based in Franklin, Tennessee, and the vehicles were built at the state’s Nissan Smyrna manufacturing plant. According to NHTSA’s Safety Recall report, lithium-ion batteries “can overheat while charging at level 3.”

The NHTSA asked owners of the affected leaf models not to use Level 3 Quick Charge, saying that the recall notification will be sent on October 24th.

“A second notice will be sent when a remedy becomes available,” the notification states.

what happened?

The agent said the battery could overheat and fire.

“Nissan has determined that the lithium-ion batteries in affected vehicles may experience excessive lithium deposits within the battery cells, increasing electrical resistance and causing fluctuations in charge state,” the release states.

“The vehicle is a Level 3 quick charge, but increased electrical resistance can lead to rapid battery heating. If rapid charging continues, battery fires can occur, increasing the risk of injury.”

Which Nissan Leaf vehicles will be affected?

Owners will be asked to call Nissan at 1-800-867-7669 and refer to recall number R25C8 or search online at nhtsa.gov by vehicle identification number.
