Zoran Mamdani to take office with bold policies for New York City
Ahead of Inauguration Day, Zoran Mamdani’s plans for New York City signal changes with national implications, USA TODAY’s Dan Morrison reports.
It costs millions of dollars to be elected mayor of New York. But do you want to make it official? It’s much cheaper: $9.
Mayor Zoran Mamdani was sworn in as leader of the country’s largest city shortly after midnight on January 1st. He received applause after taking the oath of office at a private ceremony held at a subway station beneath City Hall, but he had to go through the bureaucratic process of paying a fee to city officials. He also signed the city ledger both in print and with his signature.
“OK, this is official,” City Clerk Michael McSweeney told Mamdani. “Congratulations, Mayor.”
The new mayor said, “Thank you very much.” “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime honor.”
According to the agency’s website, when someone is elected, appointed or employed by the city, they must file an oath with the city clerk’s office. A small fee will be paid by credit card or money order. Mamdani said the payment should be just change.
More than $16.3 million was spent on Mamdani’s 2025 campaign, according to the New York City Campaign Finance Commission.
