The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist’s oath and party bloc underscore his previously unlikely rise to become the city’s 112th mayor.
What’s next for New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani?
New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani has won, but what challenges might he face once he takes office?
Zoran Mamdani’s fourth term as mayor of America’s largest city begins on January 1 with a seven-block street party and a guest appearance at the left-wing inauguration.
The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist will be sworn in by Sen. Bernie Sanders outside City Hall after being introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Mamdani is the 112th person to lead the country’s largest city, but the first Muslim and first of South Asian descent.
In 2025, Mamdani surprised the political world by first defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and then winning again in the general election in November. He ran on a progressive platform that addresses issues of affordability, reshaping the mayor’s race to resonate with Republican President Donald Trump in the White House.
Mamdani succeeds Mayor Eric Adams, whose first term government was mired in corruption scandals.
Here’s what you need to know about Mamdani’s inauguration.
When will Mamdani take office?
Shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, New York Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath of office to Mamdani in a small gathering with his family.
At 1 p.m., fellow Democratic Socialist and Brooklyn native Sanders, Vt., will be sworn in at Mamdani in a public ceremony on the steps of New York City Hall in lower Manhattan. City Auditor Mark Levine and Public Hearing Officer Jumaane Williams will also be sworn in.
A public block party will follow the ceremony.
