Need a reason to grab a slice? It’s National Pizza Week, so you might get some great deals in the next few days.

No one knows how National Pizza Week began, which runs from Sunday, January 11th to Saturday, January 17th, according to the National Day Calendar.

But pizza itself has a rich history, evolving from an ancient Mediterranean flatbread to what is most commonly referred to as pizza in 18th-century Naples, according to History.com. Immigrants brought pizza to the United States, where it became popular in the early 20th century.

Using spending at America’s largest restaurant chains as a barometer, pizza has slipped down the list of America’s favorite foods, but its popularity remains high. According to research firm Technomic, pizza, which ranked second only to hamburgers in the 1990s, has fallen behind sandwiches, coffee cafes, chicken and Mexican food over the past two decades.

According to Technomic, consumer spending at the largest U.S. pizza chains reached an estimated $30.9 billion in 2025, while burger chains surpassed $110 billion in 2025.

“Pizza chains’ sales have been roughly flat for the past two years, well below the rate of restaurant price inflation, which has increased about +4% during this period,” Kevin Shimp, senior director of industry research at Technomic, told USA TODAY.

Declining consumer confidence is also causing changes in pizza orders. Slice, an online food ordering platform for independent pizzerias, says customers are starting to order pizzas in smaller sizes and with fewer toppings. The average price of a pizza is $17, an increase of 22% over the past five years, Slice told NBC’s “Today Show” last month.

Some pizza places are offering dough-saving specials during National Pizza Week. Don’t forget to check your local pizzerias as they may also have great deals.

Pizza Hut’s Big New Yorker $10 Pizza Sale

For a limited time, available now and beyond National Pizza Week, Pizza Hut is offering a 16-inch Big New Yorker pizza for $10. To promote the special, Pizza Hut featured seven-time Super Bowl champion and future NFL Hall of Famer Tom Brady in a TV spot. The show depicts him embarking on a second career as a Pizza Hut delivery boy so he can continue to say “Hat” even after his quarterback days.

Football fans should tune in during upcoming matches. Pizza Hut is also challenging quarterbacks to say “pizza” before “hat” during a nationally televised game in order to host a free Big New Yorker Pizza Party in their city.

Domino’s Pizza is having a National Pizza Week sale

Domino’s Pizza is offering three specials during National Pizza Week with a mix-and-match deal where you can choose two or more (includes a medium two-topping pizza, bread, loaded tots, boneless chicken, pasta, sandwich, salad, or dessert) for $6.99 each.
