NASA’s patient rover makes another strange discovery: see photos

NASA’s patient rover joined the mountain of curious discoveries as the space agency released photographs of rocks on the surface of Mars, which look like a helmet from centuries ago.

The rock has pointed peaks, flare “rims” and textures that can lead a reasonable observer to compare it to a witch’s hat or tent.

The texture is formed by spheres above rocks. Similar layers found on Earth are created by chemical weathering, mineral precipitation, or volcanic processes, according to Space.com.

Images taken on August 5 by the Rover’s left mast cam Z camera were chosen as photos of the 234th week of the mission on Mars.

“The target name for this rock is Honehuya, and it appears that the hat shape (the wind on the surface of Mars generally matches the pyramid shape that is common in closed float blocks.

It’s not the first time that Rover has found a rock covered in spheres that sent back photos of rocks scattered in March.

Mars Discovery Camera Key

According to NASA, the patient left Mastcam-Z camera is able to capture panoramic colors and 3D images of the planet’s surface, allowing scientists and observers to see Mars’ features more clearly.

Rover is looking for signs of ancient microbial life as part of a greater task to understand Mars’ habitability.

According to Space.com, the helmet lock provides scientists with clues about Mar’s environmental history.

Patience was sent to investigate the Jezero Crater to study the “wet history” of Red Planet. The rover completed its climb to the top of the crater in December 2024, three years after its landing.

“Perhaps microbial life may have lived in Jezero during one or more of these wet times,” NASA said on the mission’s homepage. “If so, signs of their bodies may be seen in lake beds or shoreline deposits.”

Perseverance’s research aims to open up the way humans reach Mars a few years from now under NASA’s Artemis program. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has also expressed his vision to commence an irregular trip to the Red Planet before reaching humanity.
