NEW YORK – The 15-year-old Goff’s emotions were overwhelming at the end of his 6-3, 6-0 third round defeat six years ago when Coco Goff and Naomi Osaka met at the US Open six years ago.

It was Goff’s first appearance on the big stage at Arthur Ash Stadium, but on Monday, tears came to tears as Osaka’s revival. The No. 23 seed once again won the best of her fellow former US Open Championship, and she lovingly called her “sister” and made it to the quarterfinals with a rather efficient 6-3, 6-2 victory in front of the packed Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 1, 2025.

Gouf’s issues from previous matches in the tournament once again raised the ugh head, raised her with unforced errors and double fault gusts, defeating her early, and Osaka, the winner of Flushing Meadows, returned to take advantage of every mistake and patiently exploiting points along the baseline.

The problem began early as Gauff, the number 3 seed, broke in her first serve. She then started with an ace to stay on the first set, but twice folded, and the last one gave Osaka the set.

Gauff’s service game was the focus of tournament runs, with the 2023 champion hiring biomechanics expert Gavin Macmillan to support the department. However, she had 22 double faults during her first three rounds of victory, and five more against Osaka, combined with 33 forced errors, preventing her from overcoming those important mistakes.

Goff worked to stay in the match and took a 40-15 lead, but suffered just another meltdown, and Osaka celebrated the victory when Goff’s effective forehand return came to hit the net.

It was Osaka’s fifth time to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, and she has continued to win that title every time. She also made her first quarterfinals since opening in 2021, the last of the four grand slam titles that were Australia’s opening in 2021.

“I’m a little sensitive and I don’t want to cry, but I had a lot of fun here,” Osaka said in a post-match interview. “I was in the stands two months after giving birth to my daughter and seeing Coco. I really wanted the opportunity to come out and play, and this is my favorite court in the world.

“I respect her. The way she does herself is really special. To be such an amazing role model at such a young age, it’s a gift. I respect the world for her.”

Osaka’s quarter-final opponents will be No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova, 6-3, 6-7 (0-7), and 27 seed Marta Kostuk, 6-3, 6-3.

Two games away from victory, Osaka has played a steady match so far, limiting her mistakes and taking advantage of the opportunity when Gauff’s game is lost. In the sixth game, Gauff couldn’t gather again and was broken, giving Osaka a 4-2 advantage.

Osaka’s Naomi is in a house on the way out of the quarterfinals, earning his first set of 6-3, Gouf is double faulted and broken in the service game to stay on the set. Gauff had 14 forced errors in the set.

Osaka’s Naomi continues to put pressure on Gouf and continues to take a break 4-2. Gouf sometimes struggles to return Osaka serves and some meetings have been netted due to unlimited errors

Thanks to some forced errors from the 2023 US Open champion, Goff is broken in her serve and Osaka is controlling in the early part of the match as Osaka powers it up with a clean sweep of the game.

At Arthur Ash Stadium, they are strong at over 20,000 for their sixth meeting with Coco Gough and Naomi in Osaka. Gauff is taking a 3-2 lead over head-to-head matches, including victory in the last two meetings (2022 San Jose and 2024 Beijing).

Osaka’s first victory over Gouff took place in the third round of the 2019 US Open, where Gauff won the next time they met at Grand Slam, a three-round victory at the 2020 Australia Open.
