Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on social media on Nov. 6 that she would not run for office again, ending a groundbreaking career that made her the most powerful woman in the country’s history.
“I am not seeking re-election to Congress,” she said in a six-minute video to voters that began with “Dear San Francisco.” “I am grateful and look forward to my final year as a proud representative of your company.”
The 85-year-old San Francisco congressman, a liberal stalwart revered by his supporters and reviled by his opponents, has faced growing frustration that it’s time to step down after 20 terms. State Rep. Scott Wiener has already announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination next year, and other candidates are sure to follow suit as they seek solidly Democratic seats.
Nancy Pelosi announces retirement from Congress
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress after decades in office.
During her two terms as the highest-ranking member of Congress, Pelosi led two impeachments of President Donald Trump and orchestrated efforts to persuade President Joe Biden to withdraw his bid for a second term. She pushed through the Affordable Care Act, the biggest health care expansion in half a century, and the controversial 2008 fiscal relief law that economists say averted another Great Depression.
In the video, she praised “bringing billions of dollars back to our city and state” for transportation, environment and other projects.
Pelosi arrived in Washington after winning a special election in 1987, running for president for the first time after working as a political fundraiser and chair of the California Democratic Party.
She did not say why she decided to retire now, but rejected the idea that she was at risk of losing the election.
“I have no doubt in my mind that if I decide to run, I can win,” she told CNN a few days ago. “It’s not arrogance, it’s competency.”
